++ April 1st, 2005 - *Serendipity 0.8-beta5 released*

During the long beta-cycle of Serendipity we are happy to provide an updated release candidate. Some more bugs were found and could be squashed, so that we firmly believe this is the most stable release up to date and our install recommendation.

As we just updated our bundled Smarty library and fixed two more installer issues we believe that another beta version is required until we can release the final 0.8 version to the public. Our most important goal for this 0.8 release is that it will be rock-stable, and thus we do not want to force a hasty release.

Those issues have been addressed since 0.8-beta4:

* Fixed possible SQL injection on pingbacks (important!)
* Fix installer errors with register_globals and/or magic_quotes_runtime set to on
* Fix kubrick template errors with anonymous comments
* Hopefully fixed the "spontaneous CSS failure" for MS Internet Explorer
* Upgraded to Smarty 2.6.9
* Fixed buggy referer tracking on MySQL
* Fixed media manager direction creation permissions
* Fixed XMLRPC issue with uploading binary data and getting posts - this should fix some errors with tools like ecto.

And here's a list of latest new external plugins:

* serendipity_event_entrylastmodified: Display the entries last modification date in the article listing
* serendipity_event_externalphp: Embed foreign PHP applications inside Serendipity pages
* serendipity_event_geourl: Embed the geourl.org service metadata
* serendipity_event_geshi: GeSHI markup plugin
* serendipity_event_mimetex: Use the mimetex program to show TeX markup
* serendipity_event_motm: Music of the Moment plugin
* serendipity_event_picasa: Use the google Picasa service to display photo albums
* serendipity_event_popfetcher: Fetch entries via E-Mail and user interface with configurable Mail accounts
* serendipity_event_sidebarhider: Allow the JavaScript-based folding and unfolding of sidebar plugins on client side
* serendipity_event_smartymarkup: Allow Smarty Template Markup inside entries
More (minor) Changes can be found in our docs/NEWS file of the release bundle.
* serendipity_event_typesetbuttons: Display shortcut buttons to entry creation panel for certain XHTML-compliant markup entities (quotes, dashes)

Upgrading is easy as always: Download, unpack, go to your Admin panel, hit the upgrade button - You're done.

And please keep your feedback coming in one last time! :-)

Do I overwrite all the files via FTP to upgrade?? I don't want to hose my page.

THEN "upgrade" will appear in the admin panel? I couldn't find it anywhere.

Thanks and keep up the TREMENDOUS work!!! :)

I strongly recommend you to do the following:

1. Backup your entire s9y-installation
2. Get a dump from your database
3. Then you overwrite the files on the server

That should do it.
May be a bit cautious, but I lost my entire site once while moving some files after an upgrade, and since then I take no chances.

Overwrite your files and enter your site... that's all
